In short: light level balancing. Traditional cameras have always had a limitation when facing large windows or doors. Since the room itself is usually fairly dark and the windows and or doors are usually letting in large amounts of bright light, traditional cameras suffer from what is known as "bright out". The camera itself has a hard time trying to decide what to focus on, the dark interior, or the bright exterior. It is this extreme light level difference that causes the effect.
Wide dynamic range cameras have a much better ability to even out extreme light differences in a scene.
This new technology has many uses, not the least of which is correct "bright out". Other good uses for this style of camera are night time shots. The wide dynamic vision allows for a much more even night time picture, bringing out details that normally wouldn't even be seen.
